WordPress 101 – Keeping WordPress Up to-date

WordPress is a powerful content management system (CMS) that can be used to build great websites. WordPress is popular because it is fairly easy to use and manage, which can drive down costs.

A lot of people have a professional build their WordPress website and then self-manage it going forward, most likely adding content in the form of new or updated marketing pages, blog posts, or photo galleries.

Sure, there are alternatives to WordPress, but each has its pros and cons. I’m a big WordPress person and have built and manage some great websites using it. In my world, the better the tools the better the outcomes!

Like most things, WordPress websites do require attention and management from time to time if you want them to run properly.

Think of it like car maintenance. From time to time you must change the oil, put new windshield wipers on, fill the air in the tires, etc. etc.

Did I tell you the story about the Chevy I owned and kept putting off changing the oil? #badoutcome

In the world of WordPress three ongoing maintenance issues will be:

  • Keeping your “core” WordPress software up to date
  • Keeping any active PLUGINS up to date
  • Keeping any THEMES you are using up to date

If you are having any problems with WordPress – ANY ISSUES AT ALL – the absolute first thing you must do is update anything on the “back end” that needs updating.

How do you know there are updates?

Login to your WordPress dashboard as a full Administrator.

You’ll see little orange circles in the WordPress Dashboard when there are updates available.

Just click on the orange circles and follow the prompts.

It’s that straightforward and easy!

Here is what it looks like when you have updates available.

  1. Login to your WordPress Dashboard as an ADMINISTRATOR and check for updates
  2. Make sure you have a current full backup of your website before you do any updates (this is an Internet Marketing Best Practice)
  3. Follow the prompts to start/complete any updates
