It’s Saturday morning and that means it’s time for Terms You Should Know.


Also known as “inbound links.”

Also referred to as “link juice.”

Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. I often refer to them as “inbound links” because I think that more accurately represents what they are.

Backlinks are a VERY IMPORTANT part of a successful search engine optimization (SEO) strategy.

Simply put, Google sees links pointing to your website from other websites as a sign of TRUST and AUTHORITY, two of the most weighted variables in the Google ranking algorithm (the third is RELEVANCY).

Links from thematically similar websites that themselves are top ranked at Google, and have relevancy, authority, and trust, have more backlink value than others.

For example, say you are a Wedding Officiant.

A backlink from a colleague who is a wedding caterer has more value than your friend Joe’s autobody website. Google knows the difference!

If you are having trouble getting your website top ranked at Google make it a point to work on getting more backlinks pointing to your website. That said, it’s not as easy as you’d think, but it has to be done.

Make it a priority to start seeking and actually getting backlinks to your website. If you get one a month for 12 months, chances are you’ll see a significant bump in your rankings at Google.

Put another way, don’t get backlinks and your rankings at Google, are not likely to improve.

Yes, that’s how it works.

You can do simple link exchanges with business associates and colleagues, or maybe do a few guest blog posts at someone else’s website. The blog post idea here not only increases your online visibility and promotes your expertise but would link back to your website creating the backlink Google is looking for.
