If you use Google Analytics (and you should be) it calculates what Google calls a “Bounce Rate.”

Bounce Rate is an important number to know and it will tell you if people are coming to your website and immediately leaving  or staying and looking around.

Visitors immediately leaving is not a good thing, right?

Google Analytics considers a “bounce” as a one-page visitor. In other words, a person who visited your website took one look and for some reason hit their back button and left. Your Bounce Rate is an important information to know!

A high Bounce Rate is not a good thing and in almost all cases it indicates that something is not working correctly with your website.

Many things impact Bounce Rate, including:

  • Website hosting performance (slow loading pages)
  • Website design
  • Initial impression
  • Quality of visitor traffic
  • Marketing message and page content
  • Mobile-friendly experience
  • Following an outbound link from your home page (which, I hope, you don’t have!).
  • Pop-up boxes

What is a good Bounce Rate?

If your bounce rate is under 40% you are probably in good shape. Below 25% I would say is particularly good. Anything over 55% is worth taking a look at and seeing if there is an opportunity to push it lower. If your bounce rates are 70% or higher there is definitely a problem with your website.
